A plan to protect and enhance the la pointe Claire heritage site

In a public meeting held on Tuesday, the mayor of the City of Pointe-Claire, John Belvedere, and the members of City Council adopted the heritage conservation plan in order to protect and enhance the la pointe Claire heritage site, on the shores of Lake Saint-Louis, in the historic Pointe-Claire Village.

“This conservation plan is part of our vision to preserve this site that has shaped the history and development of our city through its location and its various heritage buildings,” stated Mayor Belvedere.

This plan follows the adoption of a by-law in 2013 aiming to protect this site. It includes the windmill, Saint-Joachim Church, the presbytery, the sacristan’s house, and buildings that were once related to parish life, including Marguerite-Bourgeoys Elementary School and the former convent of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame.

The conservation plan is based on a three-step approach. It describes and helps readers become more familiar with the heritage site, brings its significance to light, and defines policy directions. It is a reference document to guide decisions concerning all interventions in this historic area. Its implementation is harmonized with the contents of the Special Planning Program (SPP) for Pointe-Claire Village, adopted in 2016.

It is meant first and foremost for property owners in this valued area and for municipal managers. It contains all of the guidelines to ensure that actions taken in the sector are compatible with the heritage values that need to be protected.

The plan defines interventions affecting the exterior appearance of buildings, land subdivision, signage, new constructions and demolitions subject to conservation conditions determined by City Council.

“The la pointe Claire heritage site is a treasure we can all share. It reflects who we were before, who we are now, and what we will become as a society,” said Mayor John Belvedere in conclusion.
